During Monday’s weekly ACC coaches’ conference call, WFIR reporter (and my former boss at WSLS back in the late 90s) Greg Roberts asked a questions about the Hokies being tested in their upcoming game road game against UNC. Greenberg replied with, “You’re put to the test every time you play a game in this league, Greg.” Roberts followed with, “OK coach, maybe, Seth, I wanted to ask it this way, is there anything –” but then Greenberg cuts in with, “You’re going to rephrase? You’re turning into Mark Berman!”
For those that aren’t familiar with the Greenberg/Berman “feud,” and I use that term that very loosely because I don’t think Seth has any mean-spirited feuds with anyone, read my previous blog post title “When Sports Reporters Ask Dumb Questions.”
Essentially, Berman asked a questions about Jeff Allen’s suspension during the weekly conference call immediately following Allen’s supsension. Greenberg said numerous times that he would not answer any questions related to the incident, but Berman insisted on asking questions anyway. Greenberg got a little testy with Berman and has since delivered a couple of jabs at Berman, including this one from a couple of weeks ago, probably just letting Berman know that he has not forgotten the transgression.
Greenberg seems to have calmed down a little and now his verbal jabs seem to be more in fun than a serious tone. But, as I mentioned in the earlier blog posts, having covered the ACC and Big East for a number of years, coaches have long memories when it comes to the press, so it’s important to be respectful of the coaches’ wishes and carefully pick your battles. Berman clearly chose this particular battle unwisely and now he’s feeling the effects. I’m sure it’s not skin of his back, but it is fun to listen to Greenberg poke fun at him.
